Transcript: The Catalog Catalog Structure Structure A literary device used in poetry and prose to give us a list of things and create a rhetorical effect. Writers use it to make a list of multiple thoughts in a unified form. However, the poet's do not add Catalogs randomly, and they are well thought. The "list" is deliberately inserted to make the audience enjoy the conventional style of poetry. Example Characteristics Characteristics It reads like a list which can be sentences OR phrases The list is connected thematically in some way; it is NOT just a random list There's often repetition "Goblin Market" by Christina Rossetti Example Raymond Carver Was an American short story writer and poet. He was a major writer of the late 20th century and a major force in the revitalization of the American short story in literature during the 1980's. He was the son of a violent alcoholic, which carried into his own life. His struggles with alcohol lead to his resignation as a full-time lecturer at the University of Iowa and a divorce from his first marriage. Many of his poems touch on the themes of fatherhood, anxiety, and the American Dream. He died from lung cancer in 1988. He was 50 years old. Raymond Carver Bio George Ella Lyon Born April 25, 1949 from Harlan, Kentucky. First published in 1983 a poetry collection called "Mountain". Aside from that, she has taught writing at numerous colleges such as Radford University and University of Kentucky. She currently teaches writing through workshops, conferences, and author visits. George Ella Lyons Visual Reading Gwendolyn Brooks Born on June 7, 1917, she was a well-known and influential African-American poet, author, and educator. She was also the first Black woman to be a poetry consultant to the Library of Congress. At a young age, Brooks already started writing and knew she wanted to be a writer, drawing inspiration for the characters in her poetry from her urban neighborhood of Chicago and from and from an African American perspective. Choosing the right courses This pattern works for: 1. Bakersfield College 2. CSUs 3. UCs IGETC GENERAL EDUCATION PATTERN IGETC You should you use this pattern if you: 1. Want to attend a UC 2. Are undecided on a transfer institution 3. Want to attend private and out-of state institutions FYI You can also transfer to A UC without obtaining an Associate Degree at Bakersfield College. 1.
